Off-Campus Programs

Have a question about how an off-campus program might fit with your Urban Studies interests?  Talk to a faculty advisor.

Stanford in Washington

Stanford in Washington allows students to study public policy, government institutions, and political processes in Washington, DC. Offered year-round, the program provides scheduling flexibility, with a winter quarter focus on environmental policy.

Students typically attend for one quarter, combining small tutorials with policy experts, faculty-led seminars, and internships. Depending on course content, these may fulfill Urban Studies requirements or count as electives.

Internship: Urban Studies majors may satisfy the capstone internship requirement through the program by submitting work that demonstrates their learning. Prior to the internship, students must complete a Placement Objectives Agreement outlining goals, faculty supervision, and the final product. Students who conduct original research during their internship may use the experience toward an honors thesis or senior capstone paper (URBANST 203). Students should consult their major adviser before departure to confirm how coursework and internships will apply.

Internship placements of interest include organizations such as the Brookings Institution, the U.S. Department of Education, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development, the Congressional Hispanic Caucus, the Los Angeles Times, the National Council of La Raza, and the Urban Institute.

Stanford-HBCU Exchange Program

Stanford has programs with Howard University in Washington DC, Spelman and Morehouse Colleges in Atlanta, that allow students to exchange schools for a quarter/semester or for a year, depending upon the school. Howard, Spelman, and Morehouse are three of the most highly regarded historically black colleges; students are exposed to disciplines from a different perspective.

Note that, in order to receive credit at Stanford, courses taken through the exchange program must be approved by the Office of the University Registrar, including external coursework, which must be approved before it can be considered for credit toward the Urban Studies major
