Why I'm majoring in Urban Studies: As a premed student and a government official, my path to majoring in urban studies has been shaped by my fascination with how our surroundings affect health. My research into the connections between urban design and public health deepened my appreciation for the field. I began to realize the significant role that features like parks and walkable streets play in shaping both physical and mental health. By majoring in urban studies, I can effectively combine my interests in medicine and social equity, equipping myself to advocate for policies that foster healthier living conditions for all.
What I like best about Urban Studies: What I love most about urban studies is how it brings together so many different fields. It’s fascinating to see how urban design, social justice, and public health connect and influence each other, making us think critically about our environment.
Favorite class/professor: My favorite class so far has been Urban Studies 110, Introduction to Urban Studies, taught by Professor Michael Kahan. Professor Kahan is an outstanding teacher who sparked my passion for the field and inspired me to become an Urban Studies major. I loved how we explored the dynamics of cities and how they shape our lives through interesting readings and thoughtful, hands-on team projects like the City Observation assignment. It was so much fun!
