Why I'm majoring in Urban Studies: I’m majoring in Urban Studies for a variety of reasons. First, the community of Urban Studies is extremely grounded and driven to work with communities, bringing an approach that is often lacking in academia and government. It’s community-centered and people-centered. Second, the urban studies major is highly interdisciplinary, connecting geographies to sociology, economics, and almost every other field. This intersection of knowledge provides a new perspective on the world that feels so rich and layered. Finally, the liberty to pursue your own projects while receiving support and love from others is undeniable, rich, and heart-filling.

Favorite class/professor: My favorite class is URBANST 172A, "Introduction to Urban, Rural, and Regional Planning," taught by Marisa Raya. The professor cultivated an interactive class culture where the students drove the conversations, and she helped elevate her students. She really structured the course, moving readings and presentations around based on our interests and what we wanted to learn. A professor who does this, remembers your story, and brings you in is a professor who makes you feel at home. She also helped us meet so many amazing planners. I recommend connecting with her!

Favorite book (and why): My favorite book is Parable of the Sower by Octavia Butler. The book reminds me of how humanity remains strong in community and how community building helps us avoid collapse. Not just that, but it provides a unique perspective on societal collapse and who gets to live under the lens of our current structures in a futuristic setting.

Career goal/plans for the future: I plan to pursue a PhD in geography to become a resource for communities, providing tools for advocacy, community building, and regeneration.

Other academic interests: Comparative Race and Ethnicity Studies Major, Earth Systems coterminal MA program.
