Stanford in New York’s unique blend of coursework and internships inspires a diverse range of students across three distinct quarters to explore their studies and real-world work experience through the lens of New York.

Stanford In New York

Stanford in New York was a pivotal experience for me as an Urban Studies major. The ability to live and work in NYC exposed me to life after graduation and solidified my passion for urban planning.

Stanford in New York is a quarter-length program, offering 4 day/week internships tailored to each student's interest. All students also enroll in the New York City seminar, integrating their learning from coursework, the city, and their internship experiences. In addition, four to five additional electives, reflective of the program focus areas for each quarter, are offered throughout the week. A number of these courses can fulfill Urban Studies requirements.

The program is open to Urban Studies students during all quarters. The fall and spring are particularly good times to attend because of relevant field trips, guest speakers, events and course offerings. Though these offerings vary year to year, they tend to be more related to urban issues.

The initial faculty in residence for SiNY was former Urban Studies director Doug McAdam. SiNY is thrilled to be hosting Michael Kahan, co-director of Urban Studies, as faculty in residence for Autumn 2022-23.

"Stanford in New York (SiNY) was a pivotal experience for me as an urban studies major. The ability to live and work in NYC exposed me to life after graduation and solidified my passion for urban planning. During my internship with NYC’s Department of Housing Preservation and Development, I was able to establish a network of urban planners who have helped me along my career and gain hands-on experience with the community engagement process. After SiNY, I came back to campus with more direction and clarity for how to shape my remaining time at Stanford with regards to courses, skillsets, and experiences.”

"So many urban studies courses feature New York as a case study; being able to apply what I'd learned in the classroom, from urban economics and housing justice to architectural history and urban design, allowed me to fuse theory with application, enriching my undergraduate academic experience. Beyond the academic and professional growth that SINY encouraged, I'm grateful for my quarter in New York for being a time of artistic freedom. Much of my free time was spent immersing myself in the city's art scene, from exploring its various museums and galleries to attending figure drawing workshops and collaborating with local artists."
